Possible future shortage of EU emissions permits

The European Union’s executive Commission is set to publish this week 2007 carbon emissions data suggesting a future shortage of emissions permits for heavy industry, under-pinning future carbon prices.
The Commission has said that if it has gathered sufficient data it will publish the data at 1200 Brussels time (1000 GMT) on Tuesday.
The carbon market is supposed to work by putting a price on carbon emissions, forcing businesses to trim their contribution to climate change, for example by being more energy efficient.

MCX could start trading CERs

Two months after Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) launched futures trading in carbon financial instruments (CFI), it is deliberating launching a trading platform for primary CERs (certified emission reductions).
It is learnt that MCX plans to seek the approval of the Forward Markets Commission (FMC) to commence trading in primary CERs, which is also likely to bring in the requisite liquidity to carbon credit trading in India. Going by the current opening interest position of around 30 lots (about 6,000 tonne of CFIs), there has not been much improvement in liquidity ever since MCX kicked off futures trading in CFIs on January 21.

MCeX to launch May 30

The Montréal Climate Exchange (MCeX), a
joint venture of the Montréal Exchange (MX) (TSX: MXX) and the Chicago Climate
Exchange(R) (CCX), announced today that it plans to launch trading of futures
contracts on Canada carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) units on May 30, 2008,
subject to regulatory approval.
“MCeX is moving quickly to launch the first exchange-traded carbon
futures contract in Canada,” said Luc Bertrand, President and CEO of MX and
